Our Approach: How I Coach

Each coach has his or her own style and methodology that informs expectations. Below, find my expectations for my clients and what my clients can expect of me.

I Expect Your Best

If you are retaining me, then you’re probably at the top of your game. You are ready and willing to learn and are aware that you will be on a journey with me, deep in the unknown. I expect that you are ready to do and be your best. And if you aren’t doing your best, I’ll ask you to. If you can’t do that at that moment, I’ll expect you to tell me. You will be heard, and I will work to help you get back into action.

I Expect a Beginner’s Mind

Our work together is neither to validate what you already know, nor to memorize techniques, details, or facts. Our work is fundamental learning — you will bring it into your body — but first you will need to get past your head. Expect to be overwhelmed, to be amazed, and to be much more comfortable with uncertainty. I ask that you take this on with a beginner’s mind — full of childlike wonder. I will expect you to try things on and see if they fit. In this way we will learn together.

I Make Direct Requests

I’ll make a direct request like “Will you accomplish X by next Friday?” You may accept the request, counteroffer (e.g. say what you can do) or decline (rare).

I Give Straight Advice

If I am clear about the situation, I’ll deliver specific suggestions on how to handle a concern or leverage a learning opportunity. If I am not clear about your situation, I’ll say so. Regardless, see what works, and begin to observe your own judgment.

I Give Lots of Assignments

Assignments (reading, daily journaling, assessments, etc.) are outlined in each client’s learning agreement and during each session, which include specific goals, tasks, or requests that need to be handled before each session.

Learning Is My Passion

My service portfolio comes to me from 25 years experience (view full bio) as a small business owner/operator, consultant, academic and entrepreneur. My primary goal is to have you learn the most from your experiences. I endeavor to achieve that goal with you.
